Studio History
Balance Within Pilates Studio opened in February, 1995 in downtown Redmond, WA.
In the beginning there was only a teacher and a half. Within five months, there were two full-time
teachers and a new space, which expanded twice. March of 2005 (a ten year anniversary) saw the
relocation of the studio to a standalone space in downtown Redmond, where we are currently located.
Owner and Director Gail Anderson focuses on quality teaching of the full system of Pilates. Her work
facilitated the growth of a substantial clientele, many of whom have been with the studio since the
beginning. This necessitated the development of an in-house teach training program. The program is
well-respected for the quality of teachers graduating, and the thorough and in-depth approach attracts
both potential and established teaches from across the state. The course attention to historical,
modern, and rehabilitative Pilates is responsible for the high standard of teaching at Balance Within.
The integration of Pilates with manual bodywork as needed also adds depth to the studio. Many times
more than movement principles are needed to help a body access optimum function, and Balance Within
teachers know when to supplement with bodywork or refer out for clients to get the assistance they
need to maximize their Pilates experience. Looking to a wide community base of practitioners to
support movement is a key piece in treating dealing with the whole person.
Each client coming to Balance Within is seen as an individual, with specific and unique needs and
abilities. The studio specializes in private sessions and individual focus. Although group classes
are offered to those with sufficient background to safely undertake them, most clients prefer the
attention and focus of one-on-one lessons. The goal of all teachers at Balance Within is to work
with each client in a partnership process that educates as to body awareness in daily life, supported
by intelligent principles of Pilates movement to facilitate not only a Pilates session, but better
function in all activities of life.
