Modern Aspects of Pilates at Balance Within
The carefully designed movements of Joseph H. Pilates are supported by applications of modern
biomechanics and physiology. The Pilates Method is a revolutionary system of exercises
developed nearly one hundred years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Joe Pilates and his wife, Clara,
devoted their lives to shaping and teaching the work that bears their name. It is based on
the all-important concept of developing core strength to support the body correctly and easily
through not only the exercises themselves, but more importantly, all daily activities as well.
Immediate results include improved posture, enhanced flexibility, and increased circulation.
These long-term results affect the mind as well as the body. The required concentration and
focus of the Pilates work develops an easy mental awareness of the connection between body and
movement.
As Joe believed in his time, and we at Balance Within believe today, “…each muscle
may cooperatively and loyally aid in the uniform development of all our muscles…so you
will, as a matter of course, perform your work with minimum effort and maximum pleasure.”
For many people, the work is ideal body conditioning. It can be a high-end
conditioning workout for capable athletes or performers. Pilates is a wonderful
complement to strength work, specific training activities or simply a beautiful,
fluid workout.
Our Method
For large numbers of people, the Pilates method serves as a basis for rehabilitation,
strengthening, and learning. Its special appeal is the focus on core strength:
the basic stabilization necessary for correct, pain-free movements through the daily
activities and challenges of real life. Pilates work offers techniques to
consciously develop correct patterns of movement for the body to carry into the
outside world. These patterns are incorporated into each exercise of the work so
that they become a natural habit for the body to utilize outside of the studio.
