Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I study Pilates?
To enjoy the grace, strength, and economy of movement that core stabilization through
Pilates can develop. Pilates can add depth and clarity to whatever training you already
employ, or it can stand on its own as a movement system. It can aid rehabilitation for
a variety of situations.
Why do I need a teacher?
Pilates is a fairly complicated system of exercises based on some very basic, simple
principles. Quality of movement and attention to detail are valued over quantity of
repetitions. The process of learning to execute the exercises correctly is crucial to
getting optimum results and like anything worthwhile, it takes time and effort. Emphasis
here at Balance Within is on the process of Pilates as a life-long practice. While there
are many Pilates programs, it is important to consider the quality of training of the
teachers. It is also critical to know that there are presently no legal standards for
Pilates instructor training. The industry recognizes the need for standardization:
guidelines and tests are beginning to be available through the Pilates Method Alliance.
Why does Pilates seem so expensive?
Pilates may seem expensive, but given the quality of attention you receive in a private
lesson, it is quite reasonable. When a body fatigues, the weaknesses and patterns of
compensation are revealed. For this reason, it is meaningful to have the Pilates instructor’s
undivided attention throughout the session. Another factor that contributes to the cost of
Pilates is the need for specialized equipment and specialized training. Fully trained Pilates
teachers must have knowledge in the complete Pilates system of exercise and use of the equipment,
teaching and evaluation skills as well as anatomy, physiology and kinesiology. Teachers at
Balance Within experience many more hours than the minimum 600 hours required, most spending
a year and a half before they test to complete their program.
Why should I take private lessons?
One-on-one instruction proves to be invaluable to participants since it allows the skilled
instructor to observe the body in motion. Bodies are unique and dynamic, with distinctive
styles of breathing, postural habits and unconscious movement patterns. The information
gathered from observing an individuals’ habit enables the instructor to develop a thoughtful
and effective program, which promotes the integration of new, more bio-mechanically
advantageous movement patterns.
How often should I do Pilates?
Three times per week is ideal, but two times per week will yield definite results provided
the client is consistent in your practice. For most people with chronic issues, continuous,
consistent movement is the key to better daily function. The more often a pattern is set on
a body and reinforced, the easier it is for the body to own it in daily life.
What about group classes?
For most people it is more effective to begin with private lessons and then, with the teacher,
develop a realistic long-term plan for group work. While the Pilates basic principles are fairly
simple, you must also add knowledge of the choreography of the exercises and equipment set-up.
In a group setting you must be keenly body aware and be able to respond to generalized instruction
with confidence.
What is Mat Pilates?
Mat Pilates is practiced on a mat, and requires no special equipment. At advanced levels, this is
the most challenging of all Pilates practice since it requires the individual to support their own
weight against gravity. Although Mat is most commonly offered elsewhere due to affordability, many
people are unsuited to it without significant modification or preparation.
What about Pilates Equipment?
Usually referred to as Apparatus, they include: the Universal Reformer, Cadillac, High and Low Chairs,
Barrels, and many accessory pieces. All are relatively simple to use and none are mechanized. Many
people favor the practice of Pilates using the equipment as it features many springs, levers, pulleys
and other devices that serve to make the exercises more accessible. In many cases the support offered
by the equipment allows people to perform Pilates exercise they would otherwise be unable to undertake.
