Pilates for Rehabilitation
For many people with chronic pain issues, incorrect patterning can often be the cause.
Because of the care and detail Pilates teachers apply to correct movement, the work is often
referred to as corrective exercise. The importance of learning correct, functional patterns
for each individual means movement education is an essential component of rehabilitative
Pilates work. Sound principles of basic stabilization work, including core muscle development,
muscle balance, and correct skeletal alignment are the foundation of both good rehab and good
Pilates work. Assisting clients to develop their own proprioceptive awareness and carry it
over into everyday life is a major educational focus of the rehabilitative approach at Balance Within.
Often physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, and massage therapists turn to Pilates at
Balance Within to continue rehabilitative programs, strengthen or condition their patients. The
basic Pilates principles address core strength, balance, and flexibility – the same essentials
needed to restore or condition a body to functional movement. The teachers are trained to carefully
apply appropriate techniques. A number of teachers are also licensed massage practitioners, lending
extra skills in hand-on-techniques. Private sessions allow the teacher to monitor and progress the
client in a safe and gentle way.
The teachers at Balance Within are trained with knowledge of the full Pilates system, anatomy,
biomechanics, and safety. They have the ability to personalize the instruction according to the
specific needs of each client and facilitate the return to “efficient and effortless” function in
daily life. Although many people come to Pilates work with recovery in mind, most find as they
progress out of the rehab stage they go on to enjoy the full range of movement provided by the
Pilates Method.
Communication with the referring doctor or therapist is also an essential part of ongoing
rehabilitative work. Although we are not a provider and do not file insurance, some programs
and companies will allow movement training, and clients can sometimes arrange reimbursement
with specific records. We are happy to discuss this with you.
“I have worked closely with Balance Within for the last three years and am constantly impressed by the
professional manner in which they treat their clients. The instructors have been thoroughly trained not
only in the Pilates method but on how and why the body moves like it does. This knowledge allows for
tailor-made workouts that allow the client to move past weaknesses very quickly. I have great conficence
in sending patients to Balance Within to further aid in their recovery. I know of no other Pilates studio
that matches Balance Within’s dedication to excellence in providing a fun environment that produces results
safely.”
