The Pilates Method According to Joseph H. Pilates

The Pilates Method of Physical and Mental Conditioning is a revolutionary system of exercises developed nearly 100 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Pilates and his wife Clara devoted their lives to shaping and teaching the work that bears their name. It is based on the concepts of breath and circulation: getting oxygen into the bloodstream and moving it through the body to revitalize tissues and rejuvenate the body. Exercises are done on a mat, or specially designed equipment utilizing springs as resistance. When done properly, these exercises provide the “equivalent of an internal shower”, and result in uniformly balanced muscles and movement patterns characterized by grace and ease.
