Frequently Asked Questions
Who should do Pilates?Just about anyone who wants to improve their quality of life can do some form of Pilates. The level you start at will depend on your physical condition, health history, and movement history.
How will Pilates work for me?You’ll feel energized and refreshed after your very first session. Pilates is a process—the longer you’re dedicated to the practice of Pilates, the greater the reward. Over time, you’ll develop ease of movement, increased flexibility and better posture. Best of all: you just plain feel better from moving and breathing in a way you don’t normally take the time to do in a busy life. These changes carry over into your attitude to life and your ability to cope with life’s challenges.
Does everyone start with private lessons?Yes. The process of learning to execute the exercises correctly is crucial to getting optimum results and it takes time and practice. Each body is unique and what is right for one could be inappropriate for another person. Each person’s goals, learning styles and challenges are unique to them and although the end result is for you to do the best Pilates possible, there are many variables in how each person arrives at that point.
What should I wear?Comfortable stretchy clothing that is easy to move in is ideal. Some clients choose to wear socks with a non-slip bottom, which can be purchased at the studio. If you are wearing loose fitting shorts, we recommend you wear a pair of bike shorts underneath. Please refrain from wearing perfumes, perfumed lotions, or other scents.
What will my first private lesson be like? The first lesson is different from every other lesson you will have. There is an intake form for you to fill out, with questions about your health history and goals, which you will review with your teacher. Together you’ll establish a vocabulary of ideas and movements that will help you discover your center, strengthen it, and start you on the path to improving your posture and day-to-day functionality. Future lessons will be more oriented toward movement, building on the techniques from the first lesson.
What about group classes?Group classes are offered at Balance Within, but we strongly recommend a series of private lessons to ensure you know the exercises, how to safely set up the equipment and any modifications you may need as an individual. While classes may seem like an economical entry point into Pilates, a series of private lessons ensures you will get the most out of a group class. Your teacher will be the best guide to helping you progress into group classes in a safe and effective manner.
How often should I do Pilates? Two to three times per week is ideal and will yield the quickest, most definite results. Consistency in your Pilates practice will establish and reinforce new patterns of movement, leading to improved function in your day-to-day life and improvement in your golf game, skiing, tennis, rock climbing or any other recreational activity you participate in.
What kind of equipment do you use?Exercises are done on a mat, or specially designed equipment utilizing springs as resistance. Equipment pieces include: the Universal Reformer, Cadillac, High and Low Chairs, Barrels, and accessory pieces. All of the equipment is simple to use and serves to make the exercises more accessible as clients build their strength. Many of our clients consider Pilates equipment playground equipment for adults!
What should I do if I can’t make my appointment? We understand that life is hectic and occasional changes may need to be made to your schedule. You may reschedule or cancel an appointment without charge, as long as you give us at least 24 hours notice. If you need to cancel or reschedule without 24 hours notice, you will be charged for your lesson as we have a teacher scheduled and reserved for you.
